Callen Lecture 2026

Irwin R. Callen M.D. Memorial Lectureship

 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
The Irwin R. Callen, M.D. Memorial Lectureship honors the memory of a dedicated physician, educator and humanist who enriched the hospital, the Miami Heart Institute. Through his tireless efforts in his pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Callen enhanced and invigorated educational programs through sponsorships of lectureships, expansion of the library and encouragement of clinicians to publish. As an editor of the Medical Clinics of North America, Dr. Callen included many contributions from his fellow physicians. The Memorial Lectureship is dedicated to Dr. Callen for his commitment to continuing education and his pursuit of excellence.

Conducted annually in late summer/ early fall in conjunction with the annual conference of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology in Orlando, the Callen Lecture brings world-renowned medical authorities to educate Florida cardiologists, surgeons and researchers in the area of cardiovascular medicine. Notable lecturers such as Dr. John W. Kirklin, known as the “father” of modern cardiac surgery, Dr. Valentin Fuster, former president of the American Heart Association, and Dr. Michael DeBakey who revolutionized the care of the cardiovascular patient provide groundbreaking lectures with CME credits to eager attendees.

Ryan J. Tedford, MD will deliver the 38th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lecture entitled

"Right on Time: Rediscovering the Right Ventricle"

Ryan J. Tedford, MD, FACC, FAHA, FHFSA will deliver the 38th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lectureship, the "Legacy of Knowledge" on August 1, 2026 at 10:20 am (EST) as part of the Annual Meeting of the Florida Chapter, American College of Cardiology in Orlando, Florida.  The title of his lecture is:  "Right on Time: Rediscovering the Right Ventricle" and he states that In the spirit of Dr. Irwin Callen's commitment to advancing cardiovascular knowledge and challenging clinicians to continually rethink and improve patient care, this lecture revisits one of the most overlooked yet critically important chambers of the heart - the right ventricle. Once considered the "forgotten ventricle," the right ventricle is now recognized as a major determinant of outcomes across a wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease. This presentation will review the physiology of right ventricular-pulmonary arterial coupling, practical approaches to evaluating right ventricular function, and emerging hemodynamic and imaging tools that are reshaping clinical practice. Through insights from translational research and recent clinical trials, attendees will gain a mechanistic framework for understanding right heart failure and practical approaches to its assessment and treatment.

Dr. Tedford is a Professor of Medicine/Cardiology and holds the Dr. Peter C. Gazes Endowed Chair in Heart Failure at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC. He currently serves as the section head of heart failure and medical director of cardiac transplantation.  He also established and directs the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Fellowship Program at MUSC.  He is currently a Dr. Tedford, an internationally recognized clinical researcher and has published over 300 peer-reviewed original research manuscripts, invited expert reviews, editorials and book chapters.  His research efforts are focused on hemodynamic assessment of right ventricle function and its interaction with the pulmonary circulation and left heart.   This research spans the fields of pulmonary hypertension, left heart disease, exercise physiology, hemodynamics, systemic sclerosis and mechanical circulatory support.  He participates on numerous scientific advisory boards and clinical trial steering committees.    He was the co-chair of the PH due to left heart disease task force for 7th World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension.  He is currently a deputy editor for Circulation.  He previously served a deputy editor for the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and on the editorial boards for Circulation: Heart Failure¸ CHEST and JACC: Heart Failure.

We are honored to have Dr. Tedford present this prestigious lecture honoring the memory of Dr. Irwin R. Callen and continuing his legacy of knowledge.
