 PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
The Irwin R. Callen, M.D. Memorial Lectureship honors the memory of a dedicated physician, educator and humanist who enriched the hospital, the Miami Heart Institute. Through his tireless efforts in his pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Callen enhanced and invigorated educational programs through sponsorships of lectureships, expansion of the library and encouragement of clinicians to publish. As an editor of the Medical Clinics of North America, Dr. Callen included many contributions from his fellow physicians. The Memorial Lectureship is dedicated to Dr. Callen for his commitment to continuing education and his pursuit of excellence.

Conducted annually in late summer/ early fall in conjunction with the annual conference of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology in Orlando, the Callen Lecture brings world-renowned medical authorities to educate Florida cardiologists, surgeons and researchers in the area of cardiovascular medicine. Notable lecturers such as Dr. John W. Kirklin, known as the “father” of modern cardiac surgery, Dr. Valentin Fuster, former president of the American Heart Association, and Dr. Michael DeBakey who revolutionized the care of the cardiovascular patient provide groundbreaking lectures with CME credits to eager attendees.

Jose Nativi-Nicolau, MD will deliver the 37th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lecture entitled
"Disease Modifying Treatments for ATTR Amyloidosis"

Jose Nativi-Nicolau, MD, MSc, FACC, FHFSA will deliver the 37th annual Irwin R. Callen, MD Memorial Lectureship, the "Legacy of Knowledge" on August 2, 2025 at 10:20 am (EST) as part of the Annual Meeting of the Florida Chapter, American College of Cardiology.  The title of his lecture is "Disease Modifying Treatments for ATTR Amyloidosis".   Dr. Nativi-Nicolau will describe the landscape of ATTR therapies, from transthyretin stabilizers and biologics that degrade amyloidosis fibrils to novel gene therapies including CRISPR-Cas9.

Jose Nativi-Nicolau, MD, MSc, FACC, FHFSA is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist, a Professor of Medicine, and the Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Assist Device Program at Mayo Clinic Florida. After graduating from medical school at the University of Panama, he completed his internal medicine residency at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.  He then completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Utah, followed by advanced heart failure and transplantation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  He holds board certifications in internal medicine, carciovascular disease and advanced heart failure andd transplantation.

Dr. Nativi-Nicolau is a recipient of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Branislav Radovancevic Memorial-Best Mechanical Circulatory Support Award and the Transplant Early Career Award. He is recogized as a Mayo Clinic Top Performer for patient experience and has received outstanding faculty teaching awards from medical students, residents, and fellows.  He specializes in treating patients with cardiac amyloidosis, heart transplantation, cardiogenic shock, and mechanical ventricular assist devices.  He routinely performs diagnostic invasive hemodynamics and heart biopsies.

Dr.  Nativi-Nicolau publishes and collaborates with researchers worldwide, fostering a global network to promote early diagnosis and access to therapies for patients with advanced heart failure and amyloidosis.  He is an investigator in multiple international clinical trials for amyloidosis, including ATTR-ACT for tafamidis, expanded access for inotersen, ATTRIBUTE-CM for acoramidis, Cardio-TTRansform for eplontersen, expanded access for patisiran, DepleTTR for ALXN2220, and MAGNITUDE for NTLA-2001/nex-z, which is a CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system.

Dr. Nativi-Nicolau is also a co-author of the 2020 American Heart Association Scientific Statement on Amyloidosis and the 2023 American College of Cardiology Expert Consensus for patients with cardiac amyloidosis.

We are honored to have Dr. Nativi-Nicolau present this prestigious lecture honoring the memory of Dr. Irwin R. Callen and continuing his legacy of knowledge.
