This year the Callen Lecture was presented by Dr. Bentley Bobrow, MD.
Dr. Bobrow is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Arizona. He is also the Medical Director, Bureau of EMS and Trauma System, Arizona Department of Health Services.
Dr. Bobrow presented an inspiring lecture on Improving Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survival Through a System of Care Approach: The Arizona Experience. Over one quarter of a million people die of sudden cardiac arrest each year in America. Survival nationally hovers around 7%, and can vary as much as 50 times, depending upon where one lives. Applying the scientific findings that the success of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is directly related to the amount of time one is effectively bringing blood flow to the heart, Dr. Bobrow demonstrated that compression only CPR (PUSHCPR) improves survival by preventing pauses or delays in providing critical blood flow during chest compressions. He then outlined his tireless efforts to bring this knowledge to bear on the community response to sudden cardiac arrest, saving literally hundreds of lives in the State of Arizona. Dr. Bobrow is now focusing on how to improve the intial bystander response, while he is sharing the lessons he has learned in Arizona with his colleagues throughout the nation. He has become an ardent supporter of FHRI's efforts to improve the results of sudden cardiac arrest here in Florida.
We thank Dr. Bobrow for participating in this year's Irwin Callen Memorial Lectureship.
